Fenetic markers for cancer found
March 29, 2013, 02.12 PM IST
London (PTI): A groundbreaking worldwide research led by British scientists has found more than 80 genes which help determine from birth whether or not someone will develop cancer during their life. The study conducted by 1,000 experts is the largest to look for faulty DNA that drives certain cancers and raises the prospects of more effective screening programmes for prostate, breast and ovarian cancer within five years.
“It can help us identify exactly what is driving different types of cancer, which could enable us to develop new therapeutic approaches,” said Dr Harpal Kumar, the chief executive of Cancer Research UK – which part-funded the research alongside the UK-based Wellcome Trust. “This groundbreaking international work highlights how complex cancer is,” Kumar added.
The research, led by scientists at the University of Cambridge and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London, compared the DNA of 200,000 people, half of them with cancer and half without, to unravel an individual’s inherited risk of the diseases. “We’re on the verge of being able to use our knowledge of these genetic variations to develop tests that could complement breast cancer screening and take us a step closer to having an effective prostate cancer screening programme,” said study author Prof Doug Easton.
Although about 60 per cent of the genetic risk factors for all three cancer types remain unexplained, the findings are a significant step forward in the understanding of the inherited causes of the condition. In the case of prostate cancer, 16 of the 23 newly identified markers applied specifically to the most aggressive types of the disease, offering a wider scope on the best for of treatment.
The scientists looked for common genetic variations – known as single nucleotide polymorphisms – linked to the three cancers. Each alteration raised the risk of cancer by a small amount.
Latest research, published ‘Nature Genetics’ and several other science journals, transforms what is known about the genetics behind the three forms of cancers but covers only 40 per cent of the gene faults that may be involved.

5 Month old baby with heart problem operated @ GSL Medical College hospital
Five months old baby, daughter of sreenu, and varalakshmi of Mallepalli, Gandepalli mandal East Godavari District got successfully operated to heart by CHIEF CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON Dr T Rajendra Prasad and his team
This baby 5 days after birth (caesarean section) developed breathing problem.2D ECHO done and the baby was diagnosed to have a cardiac problem for which the baby was given medication.Few days later she again developed breathing problem and consulted a local pediatrician at Rajahmundry for which he prescribed medication and advised surgery. 2 months later baby again developed difficulty in breathing and vomitings for which she got admitted at GGH KAKINADA and was on ventilator for 10 days and then got discharged.
Parents observed that the baby is not taking feeds properly and also not growing.Baby was taken to Hyderabad and they advised to undergo surgery later and treated conservatively with medications.Recently the baby again developed similar complaints and got admitted in the department of paediatrics at GSL MEDICAL COLLEGE.The Pediatricain treated the child for heart failure and referred the baby to Department of CARDIOTHORACIC AND VASCULAR SURGERY,GSL MEDICAL COLLEGE
The child is examined and diagnosed to have a large PDA(patent ductus arteriosus) which is a abnormal connection between aorta and pulmonary artery.Due to this large portion of blood is going to lungs leading to difficulty in breathing and also volume overload on heart leading to heart failure. The baby was admitted and taken up for surgery by the chief cardio thoracic surgeon and the PDA WAS LIGATED.Now the baby is recovering well and taking feeds with out any difficulty.

We can try .....
How do you define good nutrition
1) Eating a Vegetarian at every meal
2) Eating Two vegetarian at every meal
3) Drinking a fruit smoothie for breakfast
To Improve Nutrition:
1. Buy whole foods -- whether canned, frozen, better fresh from the farm -- and use them in place of processed foods whenever possible.
2. Reject foods and drinks made with a calorie-dense, nutritionally empty sweetener that many believe is worse for the body than sugar.
3. Start each dinner with a mixed green salad. Not only will it help reduce your appetite for more caloric foods, but it also will automatically add veggies to your meal.
To Improve Physical Fitness:
1. Do a squat every time you pick something up. Instead of bending over in the usual way, which stresses the lower back, bend your knees and squat. This forces you to use your leg muscles and will build strength.
2. Every time you need to stand / wait for a while , tighten your thighs and butt muscles and release as many times as you can. (Don't worry, no one will see it!) This will firm leg and buttock muscles, improve blood flow -- and keep you mildly amused!
3. Whenever you're standing on a line, lift one foot a half-inch off the ground. The extra stress on your opposite foot, ankle, calf and thigh, plus your buttocks, will help firm and tone muscles. Switch feet every few minutes.
To Improve Sleep:
1. Sprinkle just-washed sheets and pillowcases with lavender water. The scent has been shown in studies to promote relaxation, which can lead to better sleep.
2. Buy a new pillow. studies show that pillows with an indent in the center can enhance sleep quality and reduce neck pain. Also, try a "cool" pillow -- one containing either all-natural fibers or a combination of sodium sulfate and ceramic fibers that help keep your head cool.

Passive Smoking ......
Passive Smoking ......
The chest X-ray stunned me: telltale signs of early lung cancer. But that is not unusual in my practice. It was the profile of the patient that was unusual. She was a 45-year-old housewife, who had no business to have such a disease. Until we got the history that her husband was a chronic chain-smoker, who puffed even in bed. One more victim of ‘passive’ smoking.
It is a long active process that needs planned ‘caring’, delicate ‘curing’ to ‘execute’. The first stage is ‘caring’. The process of germination is done with the utmost care, because the seedling is highly susceptible to parasites. The quality of care offered to the germinating seedlings would often beat the newborn intensive care units in many Third World countries.
Apatite-induced germination is one of the most popular ones, despite the fact that this naturally occurring mineral may contain residues of polonium and radium which may contaminate the growing plant. Once the small plants attain a favourable size, they will be replanted carefully in the fields. The small green plants dotting the brown earth grow into an expanse of green by the year-end, with their large leaves photosynthesising sunlight and groundfeed into nutrients, albeit a little different from other plants. Once the leaves mature, they will be carefully harvested. The golden brown ones, once the hallmark of those grown in Virginia, are supposed to be the best and most sought-after.
After harvesting, the long process of drying begins. Ironically, it is called ‘curing’. Air, sunlight, fire and heat are used for curing, but smoke is supposed to be the best one. The specially heated smoke oxidises and destroys the good carotenoids of the leaf, while keeping the ones that impart the aroma and taste. What is left behind are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons — the benzopyrenes, the nitrosamines, with shades of cadmium, nickel and arsenic, the top slot carcinogens, chemicals that are proven to cause cancer on contact.
The benign looking leaf of nicotiana tabacum has finally earned its colours. The next stage depends on what kind of housing is allotted to tobacco. The low-cost ones end up cocooned in tobacco leaves (beedi), the aristocratic types in milk white paper tubes (cigarettes), some in tin-cans aromated and fragranced as chew, and some desi ones as pan masala, reaching the local shop.
Whatever the packaging, the nicotine kick-starts an array of chemical neurotransmitters in the brain, which is perceived as pleasure. Over time the central nervous system gets hooked on to it in such a manner that we need ‘one more’, and the cycle of craving starts.
Unlike any other human invention, smoking kills and harms not only the user but also the innocent bystander. From unborn babies, to school kids, from young housewives to senior citizens, all are at risk of passive smoking and contracting diseases ranging from lung cancer to heart disease, pancreatic cancer to bronchitis, the who’s who of deadly ailments.
As per the WHO database, 55 million people died worldwide in 2004 of tobacco-related diseases, approximately 100 times the 2004 tsunami death toll. But that’s not the point. Passive smoking, as per the 2010 WHO report, killed 1,65,000 children worldwide, most of them from Africa and South East Asia, the source of smoke being their own home and not a public place where smoking ban is in place.
By careful ‘caring’ and ‘curing,’ the tobacco ‘executes’ innocent non-users as painfully as does the users. Let us all stop this sinister plan to kill us. Passive smoking is not just some “third person singular number” any more. It affects you, me and our family. We have to stop it before it kills us and maims our progeny.
On October 2, 2008, the anti-smoking law came into effect in India. It prohibits smoking in public places but home, vehicles and roads are exempt.
Violators are to be fined Rs. 200, the cost four packets of cigarettes, just enough for two days for a heavy smoker. Ridiculous is an understatement.
Since June 2004, Norway had totally banned smoking in public places including bars and restaurants. As I got out of Oslo’s Gardermoen airport two billboards caught my attention. One said: ‘The only thing we smoke here is salmon.’ The other ‘Incredible India’ – I could not agree more!

Happy women's day Exercise is a great way to boost self-esteem
A large percentage of females have self-esteem issues. They constantly look in the mirror and think, “I’m so fat. I’m not pretty. I’m not good enough.”
Unfortunately, many women just hold in all these feelings and make themselves feel even worse. This is not the answer! Before you can begin to improve your self-esteem, you will have to recognize and admit that you have an issue. Once you have recognition of the issue, you can start putting together a plan for working on the problem. Working out is one way to improve how you feel about yourself.
Here are some tips on how to start making improvements in your self-esteem:
*Look in the mirror and say that you are BEAUTIFUL no matter what
Begin to see what areas you feel you want to emphasize change in (could be tighter abs, stronger legs, more toned arms).
*Join a gym, play a sport, work out at home, walk during your lunch breaks. (Any little change creates positive energy!)
When working out or training, repeat to yourself, “I can do this! Nobody can stop me. I rock!!”–or whatever makes you feel great about yourself.
*At the end of each day you exercise, pat yourself in the back and congratulate yourself on a job well done.
*Remember that you are in charge of your life. Be proud, strong, and CONFIDENT!

Banana
Banana.....
....for one and all and for every age group.
1. Bananas are a caloric dense fruit. Consumption of just one banana anytime through the day makes one feel energetic.
2. Banana is a food most appropriate when small but nutrient dense food has to be given in situations of extreme weight loss or extreme fever where the body becomes weak and there is food aversion.
3. They are a good source of potassium and magnesium which aid in maintaining normal blood pressure and are heart protective.
4. The high potassium content promotes bone health too.
5. Banana help counteract the urinary calcium loss caused due to increase ion potassium levels in the urine.
6. Bananas have an antacid effect and are said to protect against stomach ulcers. They contain a compound called as protease inhibitor which protects the stomach from unfriendly bacteria which cause stomach or gastrointestinal disturbances.
7. Bananas are also known to stimulate cell proliferation which thickens the stomach mucosa and is a barrier against stomach acids.
8. Conditions like diarrhea can easily dehydrate the body and deplete the electrolytes.. Consumption of banana helps to restore the lost potassium and helps maintain heart function.
9. Bananas are rich in the soluble fibre pectin. Thereby it assists healthy digestion and eases out constipation.
10. They are a rich source of fructooligosaccharides which act as a prebiotic and stimulate the growth of friendly bacteria in the intestine. They protect us from harmful bacteria that cause gastric disturbances.
11. Fructooligosaccharides also produce digestive enzymes which improve the ability to absorb nutrients.
12. Bananas contain short chain fatty acids which are essentially needed by the cells lining the intestinal tract to stay healthy. This further improves the nutrient absorption.
13. They are a good source of carotenoids which are antioxidants and have a protective effect against chronic disease condition. They also have a high content of antioxidant phenolic compounds.
14. Banana is known to render a soothing effect. It has a compound called as tryptophan which on getting converted to serotonin improves mood.
15. It is one of the ideal foods to be eaten immediately after a strenuous workout too. The simple sugars present in them quickly provide energy and normalize the blood sugar levels.
Bananas can be eaten whole, as a part of a salad, as a healthy beverage or as an ingredient of a vegetable. It is a fruit for one and all and for every age group.

60% diabetics undiagnosed in India: Expert
(Times of India Nov 9, 2012, 02.13AM IST)
MUMBAI: Nearly 60% of Indians suffering from diabetes remain undiagnosed, said the International Diabetes Federation chief Jean Claude Mbanya at a diabesity summit held in Mumbai on Thursday.
Underlining the lack of awareness about the disease, he said one million Indians died every year due to diabetes-related complications.
Dr Mbanya made these observations while delivering the keynote address at the Diabesity Summit organized by The Times of India and the Sanofi Diabetes Blue Fortnight 2012.
Diabetic patients are at increased risk of death after a heart attack, suggests recent study. The reason why the risk of death is almost doubled in these patients remains unclear.
